Reptiles have been around for 300 million years, even during the dinosaur age. Reptiles are members of a class of air-breathing, ectothermic (cold-blooded) vertebrates which are characterized by laying shelled eggs and having skin covered in scales and/or scutes. Lepidosaurs (lizards, snakes, tuataras), and archosaurs (crocodilians, dinosaurs, and birds).
